This is correct (re the pc's), however we've now been left a bit
puzzled.

We had placed it on a filtered socket and the problem had remained, but
when we ran an extension lead to a plug 20 feet away, the problem
practically disappeared, so it looks like its an electric problem after
all.

Thanks for all the tips and advice though.
