iTunes actually embeds the artwork in the mp3/AAC file, which is something

can see both the merits and disadvantages off. :-S

Not sure how iTunes works (I've not used it) but if it just rips them to a
folders/files/etc try 'Album art cover downloader' as mentioned on the list
a while back. It uses Amazon too, but takes all the manual work out of it.

automatically grab the artwork from somewhere? At the moment I'm just
finding each CD on Amazon or wherever and pasting it in, but I don't fancy
doing that for 500+ CDs...
