MSS100 and CBus (was: How many PCs do you have at home?)

Works very well, when you learn the rules.

Getting the software to work without freezing took lots of trial and error.
(And when it
did freeze, I was forced to reboot). It works from my laptop over a
wireless connection,
but not from my desktop over a wired network.

On the laptop, I have to set the redirector software to redirect COM2 to
the MSS100. The
laptop only has one physical serial port, so there are no conflicts here.

But, when I start the CBus software, I must have COM2 redirected to nothing
so that when
the CBus stuff opens, it gives me an error message. Then I point redirector
COM2 at the
MSS100, then I tell the cbus software to try COM2.

Any other sequence fails (for me at least). On my desktop, I have two
physical serial
ports and the above didn't work. Disabling the physical COM2 or trying to
use COM3 instead
didn't work. Unlike the laptop, I actually use COM1 on my desktop, so this
may be a factor
here.

Anyway, once I learned the above, starting things up is reliable and
operation is reliable
as well. It all works very well. Incidentally, with CGate there's none of
this rubbish -
because you tell it about the MSS100's IP address and port and it connects
directly rather
than going through a serial connection. This appears to be because a CNI is
just a PCI
with an MSS100 inside it.

As for cost, I got the PCI as part of the cbus course, and an MSS100 costs
much less than
a CNI!
