Don't forget here that TTL levels will need inverting to talk to a PC
serial port and a resistor inserting to stop ringing. As Kevin says though
the easiest and safest thing to do is use a MAX232 chip. The advantage
apart from range is that if something goes wrong its a 3 quid Maxim chip
that dies not your 20/50/100 quid main board.
