Thanks for the responses. I've now acquired a few "choice" mp3+g
files.
After a little playing around I've plumped for the Karaoke plugin for
Meedio
which seems to work well. XMBC seemed to struggle with a number of the
files?

Now all I need to do is work out what my microphone options! I'm thinking I
can use the mike input on the soundcard and mix the channels some how? A
little reverb and echo might be handy though!
Also need to get the mike input back to node 0. Can I use a KAT5 unit for
that?

I promise to take photos of the setup at the party!

I've heard that the binary usenet groups are a good source of these :-)
