Like I say, I put a temp probe more or less where the screen would sit, and
there was only a couple of degrees difference, well within the operating
spec of the screen.  TBH we only have the fire on a few times each month
during winter (and it's a gas/living flame thing, so no real smoke), so it
was never going to be a problem for us, but I suppose if it was our main
source of heat in the room, then I would have thought twice; probably not
due to the heat, but the potential crud that could end up on the screen,
either as a result of what I was burning, or the general convection pushing
muck onto the screen.

I've not heard of it being a problem with a warranty claim, but if it was,
I'd insist on irrefutable proof that it's the position that caused the
problem, as the local temp is always within spec.  My room gets hotter in
July then it does in winter with the fire on.

I am planning to mount a plasma screen above the fireplace as well and
have been given the same advice re the fire. Is there a real problem
with heat from the fire affecting the screen? Or is this a "cover your
ass" by the shop?

I am planning to get one with a 5year guarantee to be on the safe side,
does anyone know if positioning above fireplaces on the wall has been an
issue in warranty claims?

We were warned about positioning the screen above the fire (due to the
heat), but we ran some tests, and even when the fire has been on for
hours (which it never is), the temp didn't rise more than a couple of
degrees above the ambient room temp
