I've not done any ASP stuff for about a year - i've just looked at stuff i
did then, and am still trying to get my head round what i did :)

You should be able to do
<%
intNumberFromDatabase=your method to find the next number from the
database
Set wdDoc = wdApp.ActiveDocument
wdDoc.saveas "C:\temp\newfile" & intNumberFromDatabase &
".doc" %>
That should work no problem, which would make
C:\temp\newfile1.doc
C:\temp\newfile2.doc
C:\temp\newfile3.doc
etc
