Ah, Phil, funny you should say that...

I spent some time trying to find other makes of firmware that I could
reflash my Netgear AP with so I could turn SSID Broadcasting off...

I eventually found some software called 'ATMEL Utilities', unfortuneatly
can't remember where from. ATMEL I believe make the chipsets, the software
is the SNMP control for a wide range of WAP's. So it looks like the
NetGear's support switching SSID Broadcasting off, but NetGear never
implemented it.

Load up the software, connect to your WAP over wired ethernet, uncheck the
box and click OK. Job done. :)

Yup ... used to leave mine open and found a couple of kids who go to Henry
Beaufort School not far from me sitting the other side of my garden wall
happily browsing away on a laptop.

I then changed my SSID and turned off SSID broadcasts on my Belkin AP
(which
did the trick) but I recently changed to a NetGear AP which doesn't appear
to have that option so I now restrict access by MAC address. :-(
