I have to admit I was hoping for more of an electronic solution
rather than a mechanical one.  Dreaming again...

I really do not want to tamper with the internals of the washing
machine for fear of breaking the warranty and any other repair
possibilities...

Don't these things give off any type of electronic signals when they
are done?
