thanks again; I'd managed to do the same, but in about 6 hidden columns
rather than 1 nice, tidy formula.  As you can guess, my spreadsheets mostly
work, but rarely fit on a floppy!

Assuming the value is in Cell B1 the formula would be:
=MID(B1,FIND(",",B1)+1,FIND(",",B1,FIND(",",B1)+1)-FIND(",",B1)-1)
