If your looking to put together a system yourself rather than purchase
an off the shelf system then I can recommend the following products.

These products will detect the proximity of metallic objects infront
of the sensor but can be taught to ignore the prescence of metallic
objects in the surrounding area.

I have used them to detect the car moving into the garage as you can
also set the distance that the sensor senses the object.

The product is the Osiprox Proximity Switches from Telemecanique
(another schneider electric company) I have found the best place to
get them from is RS components, good price and next day delivery.
