Hi Patrick,

This is very normal for a GPS receiver. It has to download the almanac
and ephemeris data from the satellite constellation. Once this is done
and the data stored in the GPS, the subsequent fixes are very quick as
you noted. It continues to update this information whilst operational.

There is nice glossary here with descriptions of what I am talking
about...!!  :o)

As an aside, you should note that the GPS will take much longer to get a
new fix if you have moved it more than 500 miles from it's last known
position whilst it was switched off. Again this is normal for GPS. Only
takes a few minutes though so not as long as the first fix downloading
all the data.
