IIRC RS232C specs have a maximum cable length of 50feet at an upper limit
of
20kbps
You can normally get away with longer cables if you reduce the bitrate
and/or cable capacitance
tyhe cable should also be able to handle up to 500mA in the case of a short
circuit

Good old Google found this http://www.arcelect.com/rs232.htm
which explains and gives more detail than I ever could !

Subject: [ukha_d] Maximum serial cable length??

A quick question,

I've got the opportunity to buy a 15" touch screen LCD monitor that
connects to the PC via a serial cable. I would like to mount the
unit in the kitchen to control the server which is in the attic
(approx a run of 15 meters).

Would this be possible??
Or
What would be the longest run I could expect?
Are there any amplifiers that would allow me to extend the signal?

Many thanks in advance

Magnatizerr
