What about an old bureau type arrangement where the door is hinged
along the front bottom edge and folds down toward the front and then
slides back into the cupboard as a flat surface (back of door became
writing surface), thus not obscuring the cupboard below

The plasma would obviously need to be suspended from above and the
cupboard would have be as deep as the door is tall.
