You'd re-download from the server where a copy of all the messages would
be stored......?

Depending on who hosts your email, how much you trust them to back it up
etc, you might be better off running your own local mail server (either
direct delivery if you have an always on connection, or a scheduled POP3
get) and then connecting your devices to that local server - you could
use imap for most clients, and pop3 leave on server for that one.
