I have done some work on interfacing to Ethernet before. It was a simple
interface between an Ethernet chip (Crystal semiconductors) and a pic
and a bit of code written in C to send and receive UDP/arp/icmp packets.
I used this to switch on/off some LED's connected to the pic outputs
under control from a vb app. That was as far as I got with it. However
if there is sufficient interest I could carry on the work and produce a
general purpose Ethernet enabled IO board or work with someone else who
want to achieve the same.

We would need a bit of a survey to establish what people would want from
the board, and what devices would connect to it. Whether it was a stand
alone unit or just a building block to be incorporated into another home
built device.

Cheap ethernet control from simple micro processors is almost the holy
grail (of course we all know occupancy sensing is the true holy grail) .
Whether it is using xPL, xAP or some other protocol to do the
communication
it would open up cheap and reliable home automation all around the
house.

The numbers of units that we would consume as a group would be quite a
reasonable number so as a group I think we should make it a priority to
find a cheap solution.=A0 Surely 1200+ people on the case must yield some
result.
