Sounds like you need an Exstreamer (www.exstreamer.com).  It is controlled
through a web interface, and has no display of it's own (so you can hide it
anywhere).  It has a serial port that can also be used to control it (or to
attach an IR remote control interface).  I've been playing with one
recently, and it is very easy to control (you can set bass, treble, volume,
playlists, individual songs etc).  I think there may be a bug in the dll
they provide forsending  UDP commands, but they sent me the source code so
I
can try to track it down.

It costs around £120 from Laser.   There is a wireless version too.
They also do a gadget called the Instreamer which converts audio to an MP3
stream, and transmits it over you LAN.

Alternatively, there are devices (Hauppauge MediaMVP and others) that use a
TV for menu displays, and can stream Mpeg2 movies as wells as audio.
