Steve,

Don't want to start anything here .. but just thought I would give some
thoughts as to my dads and my own experiences.

My dad is extremely picky but he is one that only buys stuff if there is a
noticeable difference. If there is no difference between something cheaper
and more expensive then he has no hesitation going for something cheaper.

Interconnects and speaker cables do make a difference, whether they are
minimal or not depends on whether yourself.

For instance the van der hul cables which my dad uses sound (in my ears)
horrible on my own system, there is too much high end detail for me and I
find it quite distressing, hence I have now use a cheaper copper cable that
I find produces a lower sounding sound.

Even the interconnects between pieces of equipment make a difference, using
the bog standard ones that come with the box and a slightly better one do
make a difference.

I got to admit I did not believe this was possible neither did my dad, we
previously had always used bog standard cables. Until my friend lent us one
of his cables to listen too and introduced us to better cables.

It is with higher end equipment which are more sensitive that brings out
the differences between cables and interconnects. The materials and
conducting properties of the cable all produce slightly varying sounds.
Cheaper equipment probably will not! i.e. my car stereo can't really tell
the difference between mp3s and the original cd. But once home .. everyone
can tell including my mum.

We have even tested different types of CDR-Audio cds, all are about the
same price and all sound different believe it or not.

But as I say it is whether you can be really bothered to sit there and test
the sound and whether you are actually inclined to spend money on this sort
of thing.

I am not in the game and in fact probably only been listening seriously to
"hifi" for about 5 years, but for me the difference is noticeable
... and I
am stubborn enough not to listen to magazines or reviews or what other
people tell me .. I only listen to my own ears.
