Yes LEDs were an option and I looked into it.  Check this out

How cool.

To get the same effect with LEDs the price went up and up (even cheap
ones).
I've read that you can have problems dimming them and switching them
completely off via and LD11 X10 module.  I've gone for halogen to keep the
cost down and they seem a better bet from the X10 side.  I think dropping
the bulbs to 10w will be a good idea and it will drop the temperature a
bit.

Just a few thoughts.....

Are there any LED based bulbs you could use?
Will they run cooler?
Do they still allow dimming?

Probably cost a bit more though!
