I thought of that, but the extremely regular period and the fact that it
continued even with all mains power shut down (including the central
heating) leads me to rule that out. But I think I've found it ...

... not a smoke alarm, but that was a good pointer. It was the CAT FLAP!
The batteries were getting low and so it started to complain. I don't know
why the sound was louder near the ceiling - maybe something to do with the
resonance of the door.

Now I can sleep at night :-)
