Yikes this takes me back.

my basic training is in Avionics so we had lots of magnatrons and the
like with real volts unlike the +5 and +12 in computers today. Where
I worked we had wooden benches and rubber mats about 1/2" thick on
the floor. The best training I was given was to keep one hand in your
pocket when testing or touching anything in the equipment. This was
as we often worked on live kit to help fault finding ( sometimes you
can just look at where the smoke comes from but that is not a cheap
way to do it).

I think the logic was that the current that could flow was low (
thick rubber mat) and that it would not flow across the heart so
was "less" likely to stop your heart (good). I think we also had
very
low trip ELCB's on the bench. Th best laugh I had was when I worked
out how somone else ( no not me) had added another bench to our
workshop. Each wooden bench had sealed conduit and 2 double sockets
to be hard wired to the wall. we had one double length bench that I
found to my horror had been wired in a "lazy" way. someone had
made
up a lead with a 13AMP plug on both ends and used this to move power
from one bench to another! Mmmm just think about that one and what
happens if you hold the wrong plug!

i must admit while in this job i got 2 good belting shocks both of
which left my hand smoking but alive (also good).

If you do not know what you are doing leave it alone.

If like me you used to know what you were doing, don't be a fool!
leave it alone!

Regards
Ian
