I suppose the best option here is to use LCD monitors at their native
resolution. There's also the option of tv-centric devices such as the
Xbox, or MVP.

People go for seperates for quality. A PC-based solution can give the same
quality by outputting digital audio to an external amplifier. You'd need
an audio system to hear the media, and no matter what it is, a PC can
interface to it. Some solutions are obviously better than others though.
My current personal favourite as far as quality, and a simple interface
goes is MythTV. It's a nightmare to setup, and I'm seriously confused, but
once it's up, I'll have a skinnable interface in each room that is as easy
to use as Tivo. As for picture quality, I plan to use LCD panels at their
native resolution in each room, and a Freeview card to capture video at the
same quality its transmitted at. I'm no audiophile, so a cheap set of
speakers and a sub in the main viewing room will do.
