Back in the dim and distant past of PC's, VGA *WAS* a standard as were CGA,
EGA etc
VGA (Video Graphics Array) originally was 640x480 31kHz Horizontal 60Hz
Vertical.
The connector was a 15pin high Density D Connector (15HD) or 5 x BNC
As graphics technology increased higher resolutions began to appear and
were
also named
SVGA (Super Video Graphic Array) 800 x 600
XGA (eXtended Video Graphics Array) 1024 x 768
... but then things started ot get silly, technology moved so fast that
multiple refresh rates became available and also much higher resolutions
and
aspect ratios. Various other acromyms started to appear for resolutions but
generally then now only give an indication to the resolution rather than
the
SCAN frequencies.
The term VGA stuck for the connector as a generic term for the PC's
Graphics
output connector in much the same way as "Hoover" is used a
generic term for
Vacuum Cleaners when in reality it is actually a brand name for a
manufacturer. Most families will "Hoover" the carpets despite
their vacuum
cleaner being Dyson, Electrolux, Vax, Panasonic etc.
Hope that helps
Keith
