My advice would be to buy one of the starter kits that has a lamp &
appliance module, as well as the CM12U PC interface, that'll get you
started.

There are several options for controllers, such as Homevision, which
is a dedicated hardware solution, or you could install something like
Homeseer, xplHAL or the xAP Desktop, there are plenty of others too.
