Newbie Install

Right,
As mentioned in my first post. I want something that I can use to
control lights, and AV equipment.
I did mention using x10 but I beileve that there are other systems
that I can use. What are they? and are there any
difference/advantages/dissadvantages of them...
Also - where is a good place to get hold of the equipment that I
will need?
