Unfortunatly, you'll get as many different answers to that question,
as you get replies. Perhaps if you outlined a bit what you want out of
your HA system and we can make some suggestions. If you just want to
play, I'd go for an X10 starter kit, or perhaps the new zwave stuff,
though how appropriate that is for beginners, I have no idea.
Once you get more money & time, you can look at the systems that
require a re-wire X10 DIN rail modules for example, or the Lutron,
Creston & C-Bus systems. There are systems aimed at DIY home
installers such as Idratek too.
