Firewire problems

I have on of these 4 bay firewire enclosures.
I hooked it up to a pc (win xp) and have times where the harddrive is
dropped
randomly sometimes when I am backing up files to it. I think it was
clashing with
my scsi controller card so I removed that and my ipod. Now when I am
copying from one
drive to the other my whole PC winxp slow down to an workable state.
Am I doing something wrong? my apple does not have a problem ? I am
thinking about doing
a clean install of XP. I need to back up this data first. Help anyone.
Is there a setting/driver I have missed. the 4bay is from special-tech
