Gary,
I cannot say about free services, but at work we use bulksms.co.uk
which work out at about 5p per text I think.
There are definitely no spam messages as a result of using this service.
They offer HTTP, SMTP, email -> SMS and a variety of other interfaces,
all of which are well documented, and work nicely
They also allow various methods of replying, SMS -> email, or SMS to
HTTP request.
I have used the SMS to email, and its pretty much instantaneous
