SD Memory Cards

I purchased a Corsair 1GB SD card for my car which is recognised as the
correct formatted size, however after about 7 days use it has now
stopped working. I can't even re format the card!

The Audi manual says the MP3 system is compatible with all brands of SD
card up to 256MB (spot the mistake of not reading the manual before
buying the SD card).

Will using an SD card in a reader that is not designed for it's
capacity damage it in this way or have I just been unlucky a bought a
duff unit?
