Having read the Netgear datasheet I was coming to the same conclusion about
it
not being a true NAS implementation. Sad really, as otherwise it's a good
solution.

Looks like the Linksys is favourite at the moment. I initially had
reservations
about the USB drives, but having read a load of reviews on the stuff I've
got no
worries now. Also useful that the NSLU2 can suck data from other shares on
a
scheduled basis, negating the need for a backup process to be running on
each
PC.

Anyone know what the NSLU2 does if it finds an open file? Does it just skip
or
halt the backup?

That's a shame, no good for Sonos then.

The Netgear SC101 looks great.
I'll probably go that route now.

Note the following comment from the "TomsNetworking" website....

"One detail we hadn't realized is that the SC101 is not a true NAS,
instead
requiring an application to be loaded on each client. This makes it more
similar to Ximeta's NetDisk NDAS-which also requires clients to run an
application to access networked shares-than to a true NAS, which typically
requires only that clients support usually SMB / CIFS over TCP/IP."
