Your iPod's don't actually switch OFF when you turn them off - they
go into a 'sleep' mode.
I assume you're turning them "off" by actually leaving them
un-used
or holding down the pause button?

Only after X hours (can't remember the number) does the iPod actually
turn itself completely off.
This explains both (a) the battery going down when you think it's off
[it's actually only asleep] and (b) the Apple logo, which only
appears on full iPod boot-up..occuring when it's been asleep for
sometime and now has actually gone fully off.
