The problem is these things are never properly "off". They just
stop the
cpu clock and put the DRAM in self-refresh mode, which consumes power
(albeit a small amount).

Flash ram is so cheap these days, they should just be putting in a
goodly amount of the stuff so that memory contents can be offloaded to
non-volatile storage when you want to turn the device off for a bit. My
Sony Clie has this feature, and can survive significant periods turned
"off". It just takes a little longer to turn it back on.
