I've checked the RF channel Keith, the Skybox which was previously
plugged in was set to channel 60 and had a good picture, the Tivo is
using RF CH60 with the Sky plugged in via scart and the picture is
wobbly and grainy. I plugged the Tivo into a local TV, and got the same
bad picture. I had a few responses on the tivocommunity a few months
ago, and they were in agreement. I've tried three different tivos.

Hi Steve,

The output of Tivo's modulator should be perfectly acceptable (as much
as an RF output can be) because most equipment tends to use the same
modulators made by Alps.
In what way is it atrocious ?
It could be that it is just set to the wrong channel an dis on a
"taboo"
channels which is one that suffers from interference by a channel -9,
-5,-1,+1,+5 or +9 away from it.
Take a look at http://www.kat5.tv/taboo.html for
more info. If the taboo
calculator isnt working try a few hours later. It is hosted on some free
server in the states and occasionally breaks for a while :-(
Another possibility is that Tivo's modulator is being overloaded by too
strong a signal being fed into it.
You can quickly prove if overloading or a Taboo channel are causing
problems by removing the aerial input to TV and seeing if its output
goes clear. (At this point all other TV signals should be missing from
your TV. If they arent then there is something strange going on with
your RF distribution system and any other modulator you use in its place
will almost certainly be affected as well

Unless the modulator cost an absolute fortune I can safely say that its
output will be mono. To get stereo modulated audio requires a nicam
encoder and these dont come cheap. The RF output of all domestic VCR's
and Set Top boxes is mono which is one of the reasons people use KAT5 to
distribute AV around their homes.
