Have to say, that was my read on this as well - it didn't enter my head
that
Sky might use this technology to allow people to skip adverts... But rather
that they would hold the patent to *STOP* anyone from doing so.
Remember that Macrovision own the patents on several of the techniques that
could be used to remove their protection, simply to prevent anyone from
marketing products which can do so.

Being able to skip ads means that there is coding stating when the adverts
start and stop.
Many moons ago there were rumours about SKY wanting to STOP people from
skiping the ads in the same was as you cant skip the Copyright warning on a
DVD.
The codes that can be used to "jump over" a portion of a
broadcast could
equally easily be used to "force you" to watch them :-(
Just thought I would point that out.
