I do something very similar indeed with Sky digital.
I take the s-video output from the sky box and feed it into a Hauppage
PVR350.
The resultant images are DVD quality (depending on the quality of your
DVDs :) )
The main issue is changing channel - that's solved using 'lirc'
(www.lirc.org) and I built a simple homemade transmitter by following
the instructions.
A friend is buying a kit from the US this week for $20 that will do both
transmit and receive.
