Re: Slug

The MP101 works fine if you use the windows-based servers.

From a Linux server (don't know if it is all distributions or just
some), the MP101 plays the MP3 file but stops part way through the
track. The MP101 then hangs or starts the next track in the album or
playlist.

I understand the problem occurs with most Linux-based servers as follows: -
- The MP101 has a memory buffer. This ensures that playback is
continuous even if the wired or wireless Ethernet connection drops for a
second due to network traffic etc.
- When you select a track for playback the MP101 loads up it's buffer.
- Once the buffer is full, either the MP101 fails to tell the server to
stop sending data, or fails to restart sending when it's buffer is
getting low.
- Once the buffer is empty, the MP101 stops playing.
- The play time will depend on the bitrate of the MP3 file, higher
bitrates = larger files, therefore a shorter buffer time.

The Twonky site just refers to the MP101 problem as an "IP Networking
Stack Error".

I read on another forum that Windows has a sloppy approach to the
networking protocols so that effectively Windows based servers are
covering up this bug in the MP101. Linux implements the protocols to
the letter, correctly, and so the MP101 bug shows up.

That's what I learned anyway. Maybe worth a google search to find out
more.

Would I buy the MP101 now? Yes, I still would as it is good value for
money.
I would seriously consider a Roku Soundbridge now as well though if you
have a little more to spend.
