It has indeed burnt a data disc, but that's what it's supposed to do (I'm
burning mp3s, not CD audio).  It was set to record the show as an mp3 file
onto the disc (that way I can fit two weeks worth of shows on one disk,
rather than burning a new one each day).  However, it appears to have
recorded a silent hour long wav file intsead, but named it as a .mp3

I'll have to do some more experiments tonight...

That sounds like it's burning a _data_ disc (with some file format),
rather than a true CD-audio disc??
