[OT] Hard Disk Dying

My media Server Hard disk appears to be dying. When backing up it came up
with a number of error messages such as 'Disk not formatted', 'Unable to
read from source or disk'. I have managed to get most of the information
off
copying directory by directory and then file by file there are a couple of
items I couldn't retrieve.
I and am now trying to work out what to do next the disk is 6 months old.
Is
there a utility I could run that would give me an idea of what is wrong and
that may enable me to get the remainder off or do I just ditch it and get a
new disk or re-format and try again?
