Only to the point where the laptop / PDA / phone says "Recharge
me" ...
Never to the point where the device actually shuts down (even then the
device should shut down quite a way in advance of the battery being
completely exhausted).

The batteries for the Compaq still have penty of life left in them when I
get them out to cycle them every so often - certainly more than enough to
bring up the lappy and run it for 10 or 15 minutes before I get a
"Time to
recharge" warning so nothing *SHOULD* be being deep discharged.

(Having said that, my ePod upstairs is probably completely flat by now...)
