To be fair it took me days to get this to work - its so bloody sensitive to
the exact apache configuration - especially when you are using DNS like
tivo.myhouse.com etc

On the reverse proxy, add something like:
<Location /tivo>
AllowOverride None
AuthType Basic
Authname tivo
AuthUserFile /usr/local/apache/conf/passwd
require valid-user
</Location>
to the httpd.conf file. Add the password to AuthUserFile using the
htpasswd utility.
Job done -- hopefully...
