I settled on the XLobby solution too.  As you say it may need a bit
more grunt at the server end but it might be worth a try if all your
control is via PPCs. As XL is free it might just be worth testing out.

Keep a very simple skin on the server and use the remote client on the
PPC.  I use wireless PPCs and a central node0 based pc and amplifier.
Works very well and gives the very friendly interface too.

I would think that PPCs are about the same price as the Squeezeboxes.
