I can't really agree with some of this.  Not wishing to start a big debate
on the Merits of Dell, or any other PC manufacturer, but we repair 16000
Dells a month, so know a thing or 2 about them.  They do not generally use
'bottom of the curve' components; they are the largest client of Western
Digital, Seagate, Intel, Abit and countless other household component

If you want to see cheap components or bad internal construction take a

k
inside a Packard Bell or Tiny (RIP), but Dell have a very firm policy of
only using tried and tested components.  They make mistakes, and I see a
lo=
t
of the recalls, but generally they also impact the other OEMs (the 'blowing
caps' issue being the best known one.)  Obviously, they drive a very hard
bargain with their suppliers, and swap the 'transparent' components (CD
roms, modems, HDs etc) quite regularly, but the core components ,such as
motherboards, don't change often within a model line.  Their factory in
Limerick is an amazing example of highly efficient supply-chain management;
they re-plan their component requirements every 2 hours, and don't actually
'buy' the part until it's scanned off the lorries, which are permanently
backed up to the loading bay.

They do tend to mess about with the PSUs, but again, this is on their
'consumer' ranges (Inspiron & Dimension).  The Optiplex and Latitude
ranges
are aimed at corporates; I've got 8 year old PSU that I use with my 1 month
old Latitude laptop.

As for replacing the CD rom, we have a target of 8 minutes to do this on a
Dell desktop.  The longest job, the motherboard, takes no longer that 25
minutes.

I can't argue about the sales guys, apart from saying that the one working
on the HSB market have very little experience and very high targets; not
conducive to great customer service, unfortunately.=20

I have to disagree with this a lot of my clients are small businesses and
home users, dell have a habit of producing systems which aren't quite
standard and cause problems down the track. Good price =3D bottom of the
cu=
rve
components =3D unreliability... the last thing a home user or small
busines=
s
wants.

An example of this was a few years ago when they produced PCs with a
non-standard power supply (I don't recall if it was the connector or what
but it sure wasn't standard). Imagine the problems this caused.

Another example of Dells way of working is their all in one printer. These
are re-badged Lexmarks with a non Lexmark printer cartridge...the
cartridge=

last about a week and then you pay dell a fortune for the replacement
cartridge...... not surprising Dell give them away is it?

I was working on a recent Dell system this week, upgrading a cd-rom to a
DVD-Rom/CDRW, in the end I left the old drive in it as it looked like it

going to take me 30 mins just to get it out!=20

I won't go into the fact that their sales drones sell XP Home to users with
office networks/servers.
