Gareth,

Since 1997, I have been an intermittently-active member of the list, and
over those 8 years, we have discussed a wide range of products,
applications, and concepts.

However, I think we have to draw a line in the sand somewhere, stand up
and say "this is a line beyond we must not, as society, go" and
that
line, I believe, lies firmly on DON'T side of Karaoke.

I realise that it is terribly fashionable to allow people to do pretty
much anything in the name of a multi-cultural society, but, for crying
out loud man, this is a UK group, and we need to respect our national
traditions.

When it comes to music, we have an ancient tradition going back to Saxon
times of standing around looking vaguely embarrassed by the second verse
of, well, anything. We do not stand up in front of groups of our friends
and inflict the third verse of "lady in red" on them. Not now,
not ever.

>From Karaoke it's a slippery slope into group singing, which leads down
the dark path to Folk Music, and then into the foul abyss that is Morris
Dancing. You may start with "Like a Prayer" after half a dozen
pints,
but before you know it, it's "hey nonny nonny", and then the only
thing
left to do is call in one of Blunkett's special clean-up teams.

Please, in the name of everything Good and True, don't go this way. We
are your friends. This is an intervention.

:-)

Mark
