Nero Recode

In another thread I mentioned how good Nero Recode's MP4 codec is, and
how it might be a solution to the DVD storage problem.
Well, it's time to take all that back :-(
Having converted a wider range of DVDs, I have come to the conclusion
that it's only any good on crisp, clean new movies - if there is a lot
of film grain, or on TV shows that it has to deinterlace first, it is
horrible, with nasty fringing artifacts and blockiness - and that is at
2Mbps which is a bitrate that even an Mpeg2 encoder such as TMPGenc can
get much better results at.
The movies that compressed well, were things like the extended Lord of
the Rings, and animated kids films like Ice Age. The worst results came
from episodes of Blackadder and Only Fools and Horses, which broke into
blocks on almost all movement (perhaps the Nero deinterlacer is not up
to scratch). However, I tried a couple of grainy old Bond films, and
they too suffered badly.
So, I hope I haven't led anyone up the garden path. I think I'll
abandon this MP4 malarky and buy more hard drives instead...
Mal
