'Inteligent' Heating Control

I want to improve the heating & hot water control I have over and
above the standard Drayton controller I've got now.  I'm not entirely
sure what I'm after but I'm thinking some kind of X-10 control of on
and off's which external temperature input (1-wire perhaps) to adjust
for when it's really cold.

I thought I remember someone on this group doing something similar but
no amount of googling will find it now.  Unfortunately the likes of
Homevision are out of my league so has anyone got ideas / details of
what could be done PC/X-10/1-wire wise?
