There are lots of options, but typically X10 is the best one to dip your
toe
in the water. As for "glue" to get things going, you could do a
lot worse
than xplhal - a bit of free software developed by Tony Tofts (one of the
folks on this list) and now maintained by the xPL Project team.

Hi, i'm new to the board and the entire automation process. I'm a computer
guru, but not electronics.

I'm looking for the simplest method to automate an existing wiring of my
house.  I would like internet access to remotely make changes, and would
like to eventually incorporate an LCD touchscreen and a HTPC (Home Theater
PC).

I've heard primitive and good things about X10 as well as others.  I would
like to automate lighting, security including an IP based webcam, the
heat/air system, and anything else that may eventually be updated (back and
forward compatibility.

Is there a solution out there without emptying my pocket and still avoiding
propriatarism?
