Thanks again for the reply, but I seem to have not explained very well -

I already have an xbox and a Netgear media player, I'm not going to use
them
for this. I'm using some clever programs on my PC for music and sound
output.

I don't want streaming mp3, control panels, or anything. All I wish to do
is to be able to hear what is playing downstairs, upstairs. Volume control
will be done by me using the remote on the downstairs or upstairs amp, all
I
need is the signal.

To look at it another way, how do I get sound that is going INTO my
downstairs amp, to also go to the upstairs amp.

I hope someone can help

Thanks

p.s. I've two netgear media players if anyone wants to buy cheap?!

You're almost spoilt for choice here - there's quite a few IP-based players
that will do what you want, e.g. (in no particular order)

WExtreamer from Barix / Laser: http://tinyurl.com/ojmc5
Squeezebox: www.slimdevices.com
Netgear MP101: http://www.netgear.com/products/details/MP101.php
Dell DDAR: http://www.automatedhome.co.uk/modules.php?name=News
<http://www.automatedhome.co.uk/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=828>
&file=article&sid=828
The Dell is long-discontinued and was a re-badged version of the Rio
Receiver (I think that's what it was called). Check eBay for both :-)

There's probably loads more I've missed, but the above seem to be most
popular on this list.

And, of course, a classic Xbox running Xbox Media Centre (XBMC,
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xbmc)

HTH,

Tim.
