I'd say "properly setup / managed" bittorrent is great :)

Use a client such as azureus and follow the guides on their web site to
tweak it (watching things like max / min connections, up / down bandwidth
etc).

Also use a plugin with azureus called speedscheduler which allows you to
set
dynamic caps on bandwidth based on time of day.  I set mine to
"off" during
peak hours (when I'm most likely to be doing other things with the
internet), "low" during the day (when I'm working) and then
"max" from about
11pm until 7am.  Azureus then queues / adjusts bandwidth to suit.

It's also worth considering a router that supports QOS such as some of the
Vigor range, mines a 2900VG.  Once you've set up QOS profiles for different
activities the router dynamically reduces the bandwidth used dependent on
the priorities that you've set.  This stops bandwidth intensive stuff from
snuffing out normal usage such as pop3, smtp, http, etc.

I've done all the above for a few years now with various ISPs (currently
I'm
with NTL) and have never had any problems with bittorrent.

Yes its normal because bittorrents flood your machine with incoming and
outgoing connections.

Letting people download from you makes things worse because when you flood
your upstream
bandwidth (which isnt much on 1mb) you put a serious lag on your download
bandwidth because
upsteam is used to make requests for downstream etc.

Rule one is that bittorrent is crap.. aint used it in years... stick to
usenet or something.
