Re: Re: I need a doorbell!!!

Noel,

Firstly I'm no C-Bus expert, but AIUI it would work as follows:

You connect your external bell push into either a bus coupler
(http://www.cbus-shop.com/product_info.php?cPath=3D52&products_id=3D38)
or
a General Input Unit
(http://www.cbus-shop.com/product_info.php?cPath=3D52&products_id=3D188)
both of which can translate a simple button press into a C-Bus network
message. Once it is in C-Bus you can again do what you wish: activate
a simple doorbell bell by connecting it to a channel on a relay output
module (e.g. http://www.cbus-shop.com/product_info.php?cPath=3D26&products_=
id=3D119),
flash existing lights etc. Simply ringing a standard doorbell makes it
a pretty expensive doorbell, but you have the option to do all sorts
of other stuff, like don't ring the bell depending on time of day etc.
Hardware also exists to create an interface between xAP and C-Bus and
I'm sure others will chip in with further details as appropriate :-)

The limitation of the bus coupler is a stated max length of 1m between
the coupler and the bell push (i.e. switch). And while it is ~=A3100 vs.
the ~=A3280 for the General Input Unit, the latter has many more
features which you may be able to make use of elsewhere in the house.
IIRC there is some anecdotal evidence that cable lengths longer than
1m are possible with the bus coupler.

HTH,

Tim.
(ready to be corrected if I've got any of that wrong...)
