Hi John.  You can mix and match.

I have an 85 connecting the mains to my network.  My wife's PC runs an 85
and my Roku Soundbridge runs a 14.  The other 14 gets used around the house
by my son on his laptop.  We have a Fujitsu media centre PC which stores
home videos and he gets good streaming to his laptop from the server. 
We've
never been able to get consistent wireless for PC's working despite
installing 3 WAPS!  Wireless works fine for PSP's though....  Who knows?

You do have to run the set up program that comes with the 85's and set a
password for the network.  You then have to tell the software which
Devolo's
are plugged in by inputting their security ID.

I'll second that.  I use Devolo 85's and 14's around the house.  Bought
from
Maplin's.  Seemed to be best price at the time.

Easy install and you get network cables in the box.

I use home plug, it is brilliant! No wires and the speed seems to be there
85mb and at a substained rate.
However, from experience:
- 200mb is not compatible with 85 and 14, but 85 and 14 are compatible with
each other.
- The cheaper units blow up after about 6 months - talking solwise here
- Zyxel do a twin pack and are better made, but then I am biased as I know
the UK sales manager and i do know how they make stuff (well).
- You can have various private networks, one recommended just in case the
network does go past the meter.

Well recommended, I have about 6 of the units and it would have been a real
pain to push cat 5 through to the various points.
